Drone rules in Canada

Which drones need a licence?

Transport Canada sorts drones by takeoff weight. Under 250 grams, you don't register the drone or need a pilot certificate. From 250 grams up, you need both.

Takeoff weight counts everything attached, so prop guards or a bigger battery can push a drone over the line. This is a summary as of September 2026, not legal advice. You are responsible for flying within the rules, so check Transport Canada's drone safety rules before you fly.

  • Under 250 g: the Mini 2 and Mini 4 Pro

No drone registration and no pilot certificate. You still have to fly safely: keep clear of airports and other aircraft, don't put people at risk, and respect their privacy.

  • 250 g and up: the Avata 2

The drone has to be registered with Transport Canada and the pilot needs a drone pilot certificate. Flying near people or in controlled airspace takes the Advanced certificate. Fly with goggles and you also need a visual observer beside you, watching the drone the whole time and doing nothing else.

  • Controlled airspace covers much of the Lower Mainland

YVR, Boundary Bay, Pitt Meadows, Langley Regional and Abbotsford airports put much of Surrey, Langley, Richmond and Vancouver in or near controlled airspace. Check your exact spot in Transport Canada's NAV Drone app before every flight.

  • Public events need a permit for every drone

Flying within 30 m of an outdoor event advertised to the public, like a festival, market or game, needs a Special Flight Operations Certificate, even for drones under 250 g. Transport Canada's service standard is up to 30 working days, so apply at least six weeks out.

Questions

Drone rental FAQ

More on pickups, payment and policies in our full FAQ and how rentals work.

How much does it cost to rent a drone?

The DJI Mini 2 is $75 a day, the Mini 4 Pro $150 and the Avata 2 Fly More Combo $200. Longer rentals cost less per day, and your booking page shows the exact price for your dates.

Do I need a drone licence to rent one?

Not to rent it. To fly it, that depends on the drone's weight. The Mini 2 weighs 249 g, so it needs no registration and no pilot certificate. The Mini 4 Pro kit ships with the standard battery, which keeps it at 249 g, so the same applies.

The Avata 2 weighs 377 g, so you need a Transport Canada drone pilot certificate, and the Advanced certificate if you will fly near people or in controlled airspace.

Can I fly a drone in Surrey, Langley or Vancouver?

Often, but check first. Much of the area sits in or near controlled airspace around YVR, Boundary Bay, Pitt Meadows, Langley Regional and Abbotsford airports. Look up your exact location in the NAV Drone app. A drone of 250 g or more in controlled airspace needs the Advanced certificate and a flight authorization, which you request in the same app.

Can I fly at a wedding, festival or sports event?

A private event that isn't advertised to the public, like most weddings, falls under the normal rules. An outdoor festival, market, concert or game that is advertised to the public needs a Special Flight Operations Certificate for any drone, including ones under 250 g. Indoor events are outside the airspace rules.

Can I rent a drone for the weekend?

Yes. We are closed Saturday and Sunday, so pick up on Friday and return on Monday and you pay the one-day rate.

Do I need insurance or a deposit?

Most orders just need a credit card on file. From $5,000 of gear, we place a security hold on your card at pickup, and take a deposit only if the card can’t take it. Insurance is required once the gear on an order is worth more than $6,000. We partner with FrontRow Insurance for short-term production cover, and our FAQ has the discount code.

What if the drone gets damaged?

Our rental agreement and damage waiver set out what you are responsible for. Read both before your first flight.

Do you deliver?

Yes, by request and for an extra fee, anywhere in Metro Vancouver, subject to approval. Ask when you book.
